Horror Films

It's that time again, Halloween, and to celebrate we have chosen 10 Halloween films from ghosts to monsters and witches to get you in the mood...

Hocus Pocus
Can anyone remember this? It was a great film back when I was a kid and believe it or not, the film was released 20 years ago, and to celebrate, the cast got together for the occasion! A great Disney film, I bet you didn't know that one of the three witches is none other than a young Sarah Jessica Parker? You do now!

Practical Magic
The story of two witch sisters who have a curse put on them, for whoever falls in love with them will face an untimely death. They have to try and fight this curse. Sounds stupid but it's actually not a bad film. Oh and it also stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock!

Beetle Juice
A classic film that has become a cult favourite, which is a fantasy film with elements of comedy. The film centres around two ghosts that are trying to get rid of the new owners of their house. This actually got turned into a cartoon at one point as well. One of Michael Keaton's most famous roles, the Beetlejuice character is now iconic. Directed buy none other than dark fantasy lover, eccentric Tim Burton who is currently in talks to write the script for a future sequel.

Scream
Back in the 90's, a very successful series of horror films were released: Scream. Every film saw the characters get killed off one by one by an anonymous killer who wore a mask that was an imitation of the man in The Scream painting by Edvard Munch. Each time, the killer turned out to be one of the characters the film had focused on so it was basically a 'whodunnit?' Though it did get a bit far fetched that wherever Sydney moved to, a new Scream killer would go on to kill everyone around her, Wes Craven's saga is still a classic, even bringing out a 6th Scream this year. I think the first is my favourite!

Paranormal Activity
These days, the horrors that are brought out never become classics and are basically forgotten about. However, this film gained success straight away and had everyone talking about it, so much so that there has now been four films with the release of a 5th out late next year and a spin off Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones due out after Christmas. The series is still muchly anticipated by many and continues to be popular - I wonder how many they'll actually be! Here's the trailer to that spin off...

Insidious
Another recent film, Insidious proved popular with many describing it as the scariest film they'd ever seen! What did you think? The sequel is out now, it was obvious there was going to be one from the ending of the first. Anyway here's the trailer to the sequel...

Blair Witch Project
This was mega popular at the time, perhaps because it was the first of its kind. Though its a horror, the film was shot as though a documentary was being made, which made it more real to life. Therefore what the character saw, was what we saw as though we were the character ourselves. Shot in a woodland setting, the film changed its dynamic when the setting was night time and the tiniest twig snapping made us jump! It was a creepy film though, but with others jumping on the bandwagon since, I wonder just how scary it would be now. The film actually had a sequel, but it wasn't particularly successful.

The Haunting
This is a bit of a forgotten horror film which came out in 1999 and starred three now well known actors in the form of Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta Jones and Owen Wilson. When this came out it was only rated a 12 which is surprising because its actually quite scary!

The Addams Family
A classic that has got to be added to the list, a family of misfits whose back garden is a grave yard! The Addams family characters actually started out as a cartoon in the New York Times but has now been turned into a franchise of films, animated series, television series, video games, figurines, merchandise and even a musical!

The Craft
This is such an underated film! Starring Neve Campbell (she loves her horrors), the story is about the experimentation of witchcraft among a bunch of high school girls, but of course, things turn nasty! Definately worth a watch.
