Whether you were smuggling whiskey over the border, doing a 'job' for the boss, or just relaxing at your favourite haunt; you wouldn't have been seen dead wearing something other than a club collar in 1920's prohibition America-and pretty soon, the same could be said for today.
1920's revival has become a massive hit since the release of Boardwalk Empire, a drama set in prohibition America which follows the antics of Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson- a political figure who ultimately controls Atlantic City, and gets up to a lot of things he really shouldn't.
So, I can already here you asking: What has a 1920's American Gangster got to do with you? Well, the answer to that is simple: Choice.
Almost over night, Boardwalk Empire has crept into mainstream convention-meaning that everything, from classic American lingo, to classic American style may well soon become part of your everyday.
Ok, so you might not find yourself sipping on Bourbon whilst chatting in a deep American accent just yet, but you should expect to see a lot more round and club collared shirts, both in casual attire and dress shirts. Expect double breasted suits, two tone and wingtip brogues; and maybe even the odd bowler hat in a few season's time.
Don't worry, mobster style isn't going to sweep the nation over night (you can put that Tommy Gun away now). You can, however, start by keeping it nice and simple. Try a new collar shape on a casual shirt that you'll get plenty of wear from. Avoid a pointed collar and go for these round collared numbers by J.Lindeberg. They give you something new without straying too far from what you may be used to, making them the perfect way to ease into the new trend.
Link your new shirt with a few well chosen accessories and capture the era perfectly-try this watch by . The plain face and clear markings give this watch a classic pocket watch resemblance, whilst the bracket strap connectors give it simplicity and functionality.
So there you have it. American prohibition style brought well into the 21st century- and there's even better news too; thees no need to find the nearest speak easy to show it off (mines a Bourbon chaser by the way).
